(Newsradio 1020 KDKA) — Convenience store chain 7-Eleven announced Tuesday that it is canceling its annual Free Slurpee Day due to coronavirus concerns.

This will be the first time since the tradition started in 2002 that the store has had to cancel its birthday celebration on July 11 (7/11).

“At 7-Eleven, our top priority is the safety of customers, Franchisees and employees,” said 7-Eleven Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Marissa Jarratt. “Gathering nine million of our closest friends in stores on one day just didn’t feel right, but I am heartened that we now have the opportunity to help the communities and neighborhoods that have been the lifeline of our business since 1927.”

Customers can still get a free Slurpee thought throughout July if they have 7REWARDS. One July first rewards member will receive a coupon for one free medium Slurpee in their account.

7-Eleven is also offering deal who use the company’s 7NOW delivery app. Whole pizzas are only $5 and including a free Slurpee with an order.

7-Eleven says it plans to celebrate its birthday by donating one million meals to people in need, through Feeding America.

“The Feeding America network of food banks has been on the ground addressing the increased need in their communities,” said Lauren Biedron, vice president of corporate partnerships at Feeding America. “We are thankful for 7-Eleven’s generous donation during this challenging time for many of our neighbors in need.”
