Rock Blog: Blink 182 Released a New Video and it's Emotional

Danny V. shares his thoughts on Blink's new music video

June 7, 2017

Blink 182 has always been one of my favorite bands. Since I was 13 and heard “What’s My Age Again” blasting through my walkman, I was a lifelong fan. And no, it’s not because I met Tom Delonge that one time:

Or that I have hung out with their new guitarist and singer, Matt Skiba at Warped Tour when he played with his other band Alkaline Trio.

I know, some people may not consider Blink 182 “proper” rock, or even noteworthy enough to get ink on KISW’s webpage. But as a fan of all things rock, hear me out for a second.

Blink 182, while still harkening back to the band that you (or your friends who didn’t like metal) listened too when you were 13, have grown up a lot. Hell, it’s been 25 years since the band formed, and they just released their newest video for “Home Is Such a Lonely Place” off of their newest album “California”. The video speaks for itself. Check it out:

This is why I love what I do. I can share new music with you, and also tell you what it means to me. It’s hard for the average person to fathom being a band on tour. Much less having a family that you have to leave for months on end while you are out on the road providing for your kids. Or even as it shows in this case, leaving loved ones and family pets too.

This video means a lot to me because, while not to the extent of touring in a band, I do know what it is like to work in another state then where my daughter lives. Her name is Lilly Astoria, and she is the love of my life.

Unfortunately, life happens and we have to make the best of the cards we are dealt. Moving to Washington to work for The Rock, was the most exciting decision I have ever made. Yet I almost turned it down. And it was simply because I didn’t want to move away from my daughter. Even if it was financially and emotionally a good move for me to be a better dad. Even though I could go back and see her as often as I can. It was still very hard to come to the realization that I was going to be away from her.

This video from one of my top 3 favorite bands, perfectly sums up what it is like, working for a job, that doesn’t allow you to be home with your loved ones as much as you like, but cherishing the time you do get with them and supporting them in every way possible. Saying goodbye to Lilly, even if it’s only a month in between visits is the hardest thing I have ever had to do, yet knowing that I can be there to talk to her daily and support her with this amazing job, doing what I love, is one of the best feelings.

So I ask you. Take a second, even if you don’t like the band, give this video a watch. I am sure there are some other single parents, or maybe not single parents that unfortunately have to spend time away from their family, be it that they are a rock star, a truck driver, in the military, showbiz, or even just on your radio. This video and me personally are here to remind you, life can be tough, but we are all in this together. Our rock family will always be here for us, whether it’s your favorite band, or even just a goofy producer on the radio. We are here for you.

Thanks for reading.
