Jabroni Journal: The New Japan G-1 Climax Heats Up

July 21, 2017

While the WWE is currently on the road to Summerslam, Japan’s premiere wrestling company New Japan Pro Wrestling is neck deep in their annual round robin tournament – the G1 Climax.  It’s the 27th year for the G-1 and this is the battleground where up and coming wrestlers make a name for themselves in the company. It’s a grueling month long tournament that finds the New Japan roster touring all around the country and competing against some of the most talented and gnarly grapplers in the world.

In past years, it was quite pricey to follow along with the G1 tournament, as U.S. fans had to pay $100 plus on live streaming video if they wanted to catch every single match. But thanks to the New Japan World app (available here) , it’s never been easier to dive first into this world of German suplexes and chops. Not only is it much easier to watch the tournament, it’s also a hell of a lot easier for the English speaking audience to follow along with all the action, as U.S. commentators Kevin Kelly and Don Callis have been hired to call the matches.

If you find yourself wanting to try something new wrestling-wise, I would highly suggest forking over the 9 dollars and signing up for a month long subscription the New Japan World network and giving it a shot. It’s the perfect time to do so, as we are in the thick of what is sure to be a jaw-dropping tournament. Some of my suggestions of wrestlers to watch for are Kota Ibushi, Tomohiro Ishii, Kenny Omega, Michael Elgin and Zach Sabre Jr., but truthfully all of the talent included in the G1 is top level.

Watch these insane clips of the main event from  Night 1 as Kota Ibushi and Tetsuya Naito completed decimated each other. I guara-damn-tee you’ll be begging for more.
