WWE Royal Rumble 2019 Predictions

Jabroni Journal

January 24, 2019

Ever since I was a little kid watching Shawn Michaels barely win the 1995 Royal Rumble, this yearly WWE event has been my second favorite wrestling Pay Per View of the year (following closely behind the “Granddaddy Of Them All” WrestleMania, of course). It’s the perfect event for even the most casual of wrestling fan, as the constant anticipation of never knowing who will enter the ring next is a blast and makes for a fun watch.

In addition to the always exciting men’s Royal Rumble match, it’s also the second year of the newly added women’s Royal Rumble match and we have a completely stacked list of matches up and down the card.

If you’d like to hear me run down the full card alongside my co-host Cody Von Whistler, check out last week’s episode of the Jabroni Journal podcast right here.

Here are my predictions for this Sunday’s WWE Royal Rumble.

Rusev (c) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura - Singles match for the WWE United States Championship

One year ago, Nakamura’s star was on the rise as he won the 2018 Men’s Royal Rumble Match. But after failing to win the title time after time against AJ Styles, his momentum really seemed to cool off. It’s always nice to see him in a featured match, of course, but I don’t see him taking the U.S. Championship Belt off of Rusev just yet.

Winner: Rusev (retains the United States Championship)

The Bar (Cesaro and Sheamus) (c) vs. The Miz and Shane McMahon - Tag team match for the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship

Who would have imagined that a tag team of Shane McMahon and the Miz would work? I certainly didn’t. When I first saw them together, I did the ultimate eyeroll. But it’s a month or so later and I’m finding myself really enjoying their on-screen work together. Will they have chemistry as tag team? Will they have what it takes to win the titles from Cesaro and Sheamus? I think so.

Winners: The Miz and Shane McMahon (New Smackdown Tag Team Champions)

Ronda Rousey (c) vs. Sasha Banks - Singles match for the WWE Raw Women's Championship

Who do I WANT to win? Sasha Banks. Who do I THINK will win? Ronda Rousey :/

Winner: Ronda Rousey (retains the Raw Women’s Championship)

Asuka (c) vs. Becky Lynch - Singles match for the WWE SmackDown Women's Championship

I’m predicting that after a brutal and hard-fought match, Asuka beats Becky after either Charlotte Flair or Ronda interferes.

Winner: Asuka (retains the Smackdown Women’s Championship)

Daniel Bryan (c) vs. AJ Styles - Singles match for the WWE Championship

I am LOVING Daniel Bryan’s “woke heel” character. When he called himself the “Planet’s Champion” this past Tuesday I was cracking up. This match will undoubtedly be off the chain. In the end, I’m going with the Vegan Warrior on a mission – Mr. Daniel Bryan.

Winner: Daniel Bryan (retains the WWE Championship)

Buddy Murphy (c) vs. Akira Tozawa vs. Hideo Itami vs. Kalisto - Fatal four-way match for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship

Buddy Murphy has been doing a bang-up job as the Cruiserweight Champion, but I’m gonna go with the dark horse in this match, Hideo Itami. Why? Because he deserves a run with that belt DAMN IT!

Winner: Hideo Itami (new Cruiserweight Champion)

Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Finn Bálor - Singles match for the WWE Universal Championship

This is a hard one. But after a lot of debating this in my mind, I’ve decided that if he comes out as the Demon, Finn is winning. If he is just regular old cool guy “Balor Club” Finn, then Lesnar is taking him to suplex city and keeping the belt. So, I guess it depends on which Finn we see on Sunday?

Winner: If we see the Demon – Finn Balor (new Universal Champion)

If we don’t see the Demon – Brock Lesnar (retains the Universal Championship)

Women's Royal Rumble match - 30-woman Royal Rumble match for a women's championship match at WrestleMania 35

After being screwed by either Ronda or Charlotte, “The Man” Becky Lynch will come out swinging and win the Rumble, securing her spot in a championship match at ‘Mania.

Winner: Becky Lynch

Men's Royal Rumble match - 30-man Royal Rumble match for a world championship match at WrestleMania 35

Three words: Seth Freakin’ Rollins

Winner: Seth Rollins
