Rock Blog: 5 Great Things About 2016

November 29, 2016

Some people will tell you rock is dead. Others will tell you that the recording industry as we know it is dead. Truth be told neither is as strong as it was in the 70s, 80s or 90s, but at the same time, neither is dead - far from it. Here are five great albums from 2016, proving rock is alive and well.

Metallica - Hardwired... to Self-Destruct

So what if Metallica took eight years to make and release Hardwired? It may be their most authentic work since The Black Album. Winner of the Game of the Thrones of Thrash, Metallica laughs at middle age with confidence and power. And a number one album!

Avenged Sevenfold - The Stage

2016 brought A7X a new drummer, a new record label and a new album - their seventh. Another punishing collection from M Shadows and company, and with all that “newness”, they didn’t miss a beat.

Ghost - Popestar

Technically not an album, just an EP, but when its new music from Ghost, who needs to get technical? If you aren’t familiar with these guys, they're from Sweden, and they mix a satanic sense of humor with a religious stage presence. Papa Emeritus III is the current face of the band. And the kicker on this EP - they cover a Eurythmics song, and crush it.

Iggy Pop - Post Pop Depression

What happens when Iggy Pop meets Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age? Magic! Josh brought his Desert Session production to Iggy, in what seemed to many as a really weird partnership. Guess what? It makes total sense. Long Live Iggy Pop!

Disturbed - Live at Red Rocks

Disturbed released six albums of a very consistent sound over the last 15 years, and their cover versions have been pretty good, a la Genesis and Tears for Fears, but really, no one saw “Sound of Silence” coming. Especially Paul Simon! But for all the great songs over the years, their live performance sleighs. See it or hear it, live from Red Rocks, Colorado!
