Rock Blog: Love Stinks

February 13, 2017

Well it's that time of year again. Valentine’s Day! Chocolates, flowers, dinner reservations. Expensive ways to show that certain loved on how much you care. Nothing bad here because face it, you want her - or him - to feel like, “Hey now that's love." And then on Wednesday it's back another 364 years of everyday, not-so-special love. That's a little dark, but a good intro to a playlist for everyone who cupid just passed by, or kicked in the ass. Because when it's good, it's great, but when it’s not, Love Stinks.

Hank Williams 'I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry'

Talk about destitute. Many have called this the saddest song ever written. And written in 1949, covered by everyone from Volbeat to Terry Bradshaw, it's just a bummer of a song. When you just got kicked to the curb, and it hurts so much, this:

Nazareth 'Love Hurts'

They didn't write it, or do the first cover, but Nazareth’s biggest hit is a real tear-jerker. From the title to the chorus - ”Love Hurts, Love Scars, Love Wounds and Marks." Damn, somebody wasn't very nice in that breakup, were they?

Tom Waits 'Bad Liver and a Broken Heart'

I’m an unapologetic Tom Waits nerd. In the 70s, he made five albums of sad, lonely songs. The best. His album “Small Change” is full of nothing but songs about blood, whiskey and broken hearts. Like this one:

Cheap Trick 'The Flame'

Sure, it's as sugary as they come, The Tricks only #1 song to boot! But if you just read the lyrics, it's a breakup cry. And sadly, they didn't write it. But still, sadness.

Frank Sinatra 'In the Wee Small Hours'

Oh, so you say Frank ain't rock. Maybe not, but when you're down and out, and you can't get her out of your head, Frank (and a bottle of Jack - because that's what Frank drank) is your friend.

Pearl Jam 'Black'

“I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be a star in somebody else's sky. But why, why, why can't it be, can't it be mine." Gets you every time. Eddie strikes with one of the most heart wrenching lines ever.

The J. Geils Band 'Love Stinks'

It's a silly novelty song, yes. It's been played to death as one of the longest running bad jokes in music. But still, a nice shot of F-U!
