Rock Blog: Kurt At 50

February 20, 2017

It’s no easy job being the face of a generation, as was Kurt Cobain in the 90s. At the height of Nirvana’s too brief career, Kurt, not handling fame and fortune very well, took his own life. A very, very dark day was April 5th, 1994. The only way I consider myself lucky at this time was to be working 3 blocks from The Seattle Center, where a memorial to Kurt’s legacy was staged. I walked over, expecting maybe a couple of hundred kids, and saw the outpouring of grief from seven thousand who put him high upon the pedestal. An image no one could forget. I haven’t forgotton. Kurt was gone at the young age of 27.

Today Kurt would have been 50 years old. As Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains continue to make music, you have to wonder what would Nirvana be doing? What would Kurt be doing? Would there have ever been a Foo Fighters?

From the most humble beginnings to the Seattle’s most famous musician, here’s 7 songs celebrating what would have been Kurt’s 50th. Happy Birthday Kurt.
