Migs Blog: Hockey For A Great Cause!

February 21, 2017

On Saturday night I got to be a part of an awesome night of hockey, for a great cause…the Ronald McDonald House.

Huge thanks to the RMHC and the Seattle Thunderbirds for putting on such an incredible day of hockey to raise money and awareness for the Ronald McDonald house.  All day long there were games going on at the Showare Center…then the T-Birds took on (and beat) the Portland Winterhawks, and after the game we played in the “All Star” game.  This game features high money raisers, as well as some local media folks (like myself), and some former pros.

Every year that I take part I am always pinching myself, as I get to share the ice with some T-Birds legends, and guys that had great careers in the NHL.  Guys like Jamie Huscroft, Brendan Witt, Jim McTaggert, Danny Lorenz, Blake Knox, Tyler Willis, Jamie Butt, Doug Kirton, and more!

The annual Hockey Challenge has now raised over $4.9 million for the RMHC in 18 years….I am sure after this weekend they surpassed the 5 million mark!

Every year they spotlight one kid and his or her family that have been helped by the Ronald McDonald House.  This year it featured Bretton Chitwood…Bretton played hockey in Bellingham before being diagnosed with bone cancer.  Unfortunately Bretton had his foot amputated to stop the spread of cancer, but he has every intention to get back out on the ice one day.

Bretton was there for the ceremonial puck drop, and I am getting goose bumps as I type this… typically after the puck drop, both of the team captains shake hands and pose for a picture…. This time the entire T-Birds team surrounded Bretton for the picture.  Just a classy move by all of these players!

As for how our game went…we ended up winning in a shoot out…and I had the time of my life… and I didn’t stink up the rink this time (emphasis on this time haha)!

Thanks to Alice Tang for posting these pix…
