Remembering Chris Cornell

Today marks the one year anniversary of Chris Cornell’s passing...it’s still hard to wrap my head around it, and there isn’t a week that goes by where I am not thinking about Cornell and listening to his music.

Just yesterday I was driving around and listening to Audioslave.  For some reason, the music of Audioslave has been my go to since his passing…more so than any of his other work.

That being said…I thought I would share with you my favorite Cornell songs...I chose one from all of his musical projects:  Soundgarden, Solo, Temple Of The Dog, and Audioslave.

Let’s start with the band that introduced us to Chris…Soundgarden.  I’ll never forget the first time I heard "Loud Love" on MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball…it made me instantly fall in love with the band.  To pick one song as my all time favorite is an impossible task, but the first to come to mind is a song that helped me during a tough time in college…I didn’t go back home to Brooklyn for a summer and stayed in Plattsburgh NY….I was dealing with some tough times and their record “Down On The Upside” just came out, and that record was all we listened to at our house.  The song “Blow Up The Outside World” was my go to for whenever I needed to just chill and absorb the music and Chris’s words.

When it comes to solo stuff…It’s an easy choice for me.  It’s the song that first made me realize how powerful Chris can be by himself and with an acoustic guitar.  When I picked up the soundtrack to the movie Singles and came across the song “Seasons”, I (like probably many) was truly blown away.

I am glad that I was able to see Chris in all of his musical endeavors… I was able to see Soundgarden, Audioslave, I was able to see him solo multiple times…and last year I was able to see Temple Of The Dog.  That show was next level…to finally hear those songs live…as well as hearing them perform some Mother Love Bone songs (Temple Of The Dog was formed as a way to pay tribute to MLB frontman, Andrew Wood…who was a close friend of Chris).  My favorite Temple Of The Dog song is the very last song on the record…so damn powerful…one of the songs that I feel is Chris at his best…

Like I mentioned before…the music of Audioslave has really hit me since Chris’ passing…and no different than any of his other projects, it’s impossible to pick an absolute favorite…but there is one song that always connected with me.  It’s “Be Yourself” off of their record “Out Of Exile”.

This morning a listener texted and asked me what my favorite memory I had with Chris.  For me, it was when I got to interview him back in October of 2015.  Chris was doing a solo show at Benaroya Hall, and I was invited backstage to talk to him minutes before he took the stage.  It was just me, Chris, and Vicky B. in the room…and he was so cool, engaging, and fun to chat with.  I just loved how he saw my tattoos and it ended up being a fun and random chat about tattoos and those tattoo reality TV shows…

Here is the full interview…I know I had a great time getting a few minutes with Chris, I hope you enjoy listening to it as we remember his legacy and art.
