4 PNW Double IPAs That Are Changing The Game

Taryn's Wreckreation Guide

October 25, 2017

I'm a proud hop addict, therefore I live in one of the most spectacular places for getting my fix. Although the IPAs being generated from the PNW tend to draw quite a bit of attention, our Double IPAs are not to be ignored! In my continued quest to taste them all, these front runners have pleased my palatte time and time again.

Mammoth Jack IIPASkookum Brewery, Arlington: Just across the freeway from where I live is a brewery I've been supporting since its infancy, and Skookum's Mammoth Jack IIPA is probably one of the very first Double IPAs I had ever had. Now, this doesn't make me biased - it makes me hyper-critical of other Double IPAs! They truly set the bar with this one, with a near perfect balance of fruity and hoppy. Clocking in at 8.2% ABV and 80 IBUs, it's as refreshing as a IIPA can get.

Hopruption Double IPA - Sumerian Brewing Company, Woodinville: Not only does this fine brew pay homage to the Van Halen masterpiece 'Eruption', it also happens to be my favorite beer they make! Clearly I'm not the only one - this sensational creation just won Double Gold from Sip Northwest's Best of the NW! We've been sipping down many-a-can during our remodel. It's a hefty 8.3% ABV and 95 IBUs.

Double Rainbow Suspenders - Seapine Brewing Company, Seattle: Ever had a beer so smooth you'd never think it was a Double IPA? I hadn't either - until THIS happened! And with a name like Double Rainbow Suspenders, you kind of have to try it, right? Offering 8.7% ABV and 80 IBUs, the flavors have been carefully concocted so this ultra hoppy brew won't overwhelm you in the slightest!

Couldn't pass up a name like Rainbow Suspenders #isitfridayyet

Ballz Deep Double IPA - 7 Seas Brewing, Gig Harbor: If you prefer more malt flavor in your Double IPAs, this monster brew will serve you well. But don't forget the hops! 7 Seas doesn't slack on those in the slightest. It's a perfect marriage between the two components, and also comes in cans which is PERFECT for my mountain and beach adventures. And because I am a child, yes, the name makes me snicker. 8.4% ABV and 84 IBUs have my taste buds soaring.
