5 Reasons To Visit San Juan Island During The Off-Season

Taryn's Wreckreation Guide

Take it from me - you absolutely do NOT have to wait until the summer months to visit San Juan Island! In fact, this is one of my favorite times of the year to head over and up. Here are the 5 reasons you should do the same!

1. Storm watching at its best. When the wind picks up the rain falls hard, the island is almost more alive. You can hear the waves crashing, the trees swaying and the rain slapping. Cozy up with a blanket, a beer from the winter warmer category and play some card games while you take in the sounds of the storm!

2. The events are still happening! This weekend is the Roche Harbor Salmon Classic, a legendary derby with $26,000 in prizes, a prime rib dinner and some of the best fish tales you'll ever hear. In March, they'll be hosting the Roche Harbor Irish Music Festival, with musicians and spectators gathering in the name of traditional Irish music. Plus the first and third Tuesdays of every month, you can catch a Best of the Fest film, spotlighting favorites from the Friday Harbor Film Festival.

3. Duck Soup - enough said. They're closed for a seasonal break at the moment, reopening in early February, and the Duck Soup hype totally checks out. Their menu features locally sustained ingredients from around the islands, plus handcrafted cocktails with unique twists all served in a quaint, rustic cabin in the woods.

4. Local beer tasting. San Juan Island Brewing Company is a stunning destination for people who love to drink local brews. Their beautifully woodworked space is warm and inviting this time of year, and their event calendar offers everything from trivia to live music. I highly recommend the Outer Island IPA, but definitely snag a tasting tray and sample a few - they're shaped like San Juan Island!

5. Take a scenic flight. Seeing the San Juans from above is truly spectacular, even in the off season. San Juan Airlines offers roundtrip transportation from Bellingham to the islands daily, and it's a great change of pace from the ferry lines! But even if you ferry it out there, check out their numerous adventures to get you off the ground and up in the clouds for a totally new island experience!

Don't wait till the summertime - head to San Juan Island now! Adventure awaits, even during the colder months!

For those headed to the Roche Harbor Salmon Classic this weekend, I'll see you there!

Happy Adventuring,
