BC Getaway

April 4, 2016

On Friday night, the lovely Alexis Smith took on the night shift so I could head north! Over the weekend, we had an AWESOME trip up to BC for a quick overnight stay. A band we love was playing a gig in Vancouver, BC, so we decided to make a night of it.

Just before you hit Vancouver, you'll pass through Richmond, and there's a fabulous place to stay called River Rock Casino Resort. It was our first time staying there and we LOVED it. Our room looked out over the marina, and there were so many gorgeous yachts and sail boats to ogle! Aaaahhhhh must be nice. One of the great things about River Rock is the fact that the Sky Train picks you up right there and gets you into downtown Vancouver in about 20 minutes! Super convenient, and then you don't have to worry about finding parking in the city! Also, they have a bar called Lulu's Lounge, which reminded me of Steve Migs and Ben The Psycho Muppet, since they both have dogs named Lulu. ;)

Every time we go to Vancouver, we end up eating at the same sushi restaurant. Not that we aren't into trying new things, but we just LOVE this place so much. ShuRaku is a must-stop if you're in the city and love sushi. The staff is super kind, the menu is incredible, and their sake selection is MASSIVE! That's what keeps us coming back again and again.

After dinner, we popped into The Bourbon in Gas Town for pre-show libations and met some awesome bartenders named Aleem and Ian. After two beers and a shot of Fireball, it was time to head to the venue!

When we first drove by The Imperial, we thought it looked like it was closed! We were worried the venue had moved! Looks can be deceiving... when you get inside, it was absolutely stunning and beautiful.  The first band we saw was Jack Garton & The Demon Squadron, complete with an accordion and lap steel! Awesome folk/stomp music that had everyone dancing.

Next up was The Boom Booms, and it was definitely feel-good music. If soul and reggae had a baby, that's what it was!

The headliners were Five Alarm Funk, an UNBELIEVABLE 9-piece from Vancouver, BC and one of my all time favorite bands. They are so insanely funky, you can't NOT dance. When you break it down, it's 3 horns, 3 guitars, and 3 drummers/percussionists. You'll be BLOWN AWAY by their humongous sound! The crowd was jumping the whole time!! I didn't want them to stop playing!!

After the show, we perused the River Rock Casino and found a delicious late-night slice of pizza.

In the morning, we woke up and ventured to White Rock, BC, a beautiful little beach town just north of the border crossing. Every time we go there, I want to move there. Which I cannot afford but hey, a girl can dream. The sun was out and the beach was beautiful! If you've never been, put this on your to-do list this spring. We hit Wings for, you guessed it, WINGS and that really hit the spot!

If you haven't been up north in a while, now's a great time to go with the exchange rate! :) We had a super fun trip and will be back again SOON!

Happy Adventuring,

Taryn Daly
