Ocean Shores Getaway

January 6, 2016

Heading to the ocean in the wintertime, you're packing rain gear and planning to watch the storms roll in from your hotel room, right? That's what we were doing. The forecast called for a 90% chance of rain during the dates we had booked, staying a few days between Christmas and New Years Ev e.

The meteorologists got it all wrong!! The whole time we were in Ocean Shores, the weather was beautiful. Sure, the hooded jacket was nice to block out the cold, but we stayed dry for three days of beach combing with the dogs.

We stayed at Shilo Inn on a Monday and Tuesday night, right on the beach, in a dog friendly room - the pups loved it! It was on the first floor so it was super convenient for taking the labs out for potty breaks and walks to the beach.

We explored the beach for a few hours the minute we rolled into town. We couldn't believe how gorgeous it was, and how few others were out and about!

For dinner Monday night, we went to Galway Bay for some Irish grub. Highly recommend the Shepard's Pie and Beef In Guinness, and their soda bread is TO DIE FOR!!! Also ordered a cup of chowder, shared everything, and were totally stuffed. May have overdone it a bit! Brought in the cribbage board, and enjoyed an awesome night. When we got home, we hit the hot tub for a soak, which was open 24 hours by the way!

After an amazing night's sleep in a HUGE bed, we spent ALL DAY Tuesday at the beach after breakfast. We flew a kite for hours, walked up and down the almost deserted beach, listened to The Pimps of Joytime, and even watched an eagle mackin' on a duck! You could hear the bones snapping and the flesh ripping - it was pretty wild.

That night we stayed in - the dogs were EXHAUSTED, as were we, so we put on football, ordered pizza from Dugan's, and relaxed. It was the best way to end a full day of beach combing! We all passed out early and slept hard.

We woke up Wednesday morning to the most beautiful day. Not a cloud in the sky! We went for one last beach walk before hitting the road, and if we hadn't  had New Year's Eve plans the next day, we would have definitely stayed another night. It was very hard to drive away! We had an absolute blast, and the quick getaway was one of the highlights of my 2015!

For a 2 1/2 hour drive from Seattle, I HIGHLY recommend getting out to Washington's ocean beaches. Especially during the off season, the crowds are small and you essentially have the run of the beach! We'll definitely be heading back soon.

Happy Adventuring,
