Rock Blog: Top 10 Primus Tracks

September 29, 2016

Today is the birthday of one of the greatest bass players of all time. Many would argue he IS the best. Les Claypool has undoubtedly influenced every bass player who came after him. He caught the attention and earned the respect of every bass player who came before him. The Primus lineup has changed off and on since the mid-80s, but one constant has remained: Les Claypool. Without him, there would truly be no Primus.

In honor of Mr. Claypool's 53rd birthday, I whittled down my list of favorite Primus songs to a Top 10. It was not easy, and these 10 masterpieces are in no particular order:

1. "Southbound Pachyderm" (Tales From The Punchbowl)

2.  "Mr. Krinkle" (Pork Soda)

3.  "Jilly's On Smack" (Green Naugahyde)

4.  "Tommy The Cat" (Sailing the Seas of Cheese)

5.  "Duchess and the Proverbial Mind Spread" (Brown Album)

6. "Jerry Was A Racecar Driver" (Sailing The Seas of Cheese)

7.  "Lacquer Head" (Antipop)

8.  "Too Many Puppies" (Frizzle Fry)

9.  "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver" (Tales from the Punchbowl)

10.  "John The Fisherman" (Suck On This / Frizzle Fry)

January will mark two years since Primus last came to Seattle, touring behind the album Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble. I think we are due for another Primus concert very soon, because let's be honest - PRIMUS SUCKS.

Happy Birthday, Les, and thank you for the wild musical ride over the decades. Keep 'em coming.
