Taryn's Wreckreation Guide: 4 Reasons It's 'The Best Lil' Fair In The West'

August 1, 2017

Fair season is in full swing, and although I never met a fair I didn't like, I'll always be a sucker for my hometown fair - The Stanwood-Camano Community Fair, otherwise known as 'The Best Lil' Fair In The West'!

My family has been coming to the S/C Fair since I was in diapers, and it always falls on my dad's birthday weekend, so it's a long-standing Daly family tradition! I could list two-dozen reasons I love this fair, but I decided to narrow it down to my top 4:

1. The Entertainment. Every year, the stages are packed with top-notch bands and artists, some local and some not so local. When I was really young, I danced on stage with The Kingsmen! And in recent years I've seen my friends in The Lowdown Drifters play the fair, and Heart By Heart featuring KISW legend Bob Rivers.

Don't miss: The Lip Sync Contest! It runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday and it's always an absolute riot. I may or may not have participated 3 times in my life... AND be sure to catch local musician Aaron Crawford. He and his band recently covered an Audioslave song in tribute to Chris Cornell, and it ROCKED. I hope they recreate this performance on Friday Night!

2. The Food. Oh. My. God. My dad and I are both the type that "have to try it all", so for three days straight, we tend to overindulge. But hey, it's only once a year so BACK OFF! Corn dogs, turkey legs, tacos, cotton candy, corn-on-the-cob, funnel cake... that's legitimately just the tip of the fair food iceberg!

Don't miss: The curly fries, and you know the ones. They're created with a drill apparatus and they come out in a hot, greasy block of curly goodness!

3. The Animals. You guys probably know I'm on this big mini-farm kick (oxymoron?) lately, getting ready to add goats to the mix in a few weeks. I am going to be OBSESSING over the animal exhibits at the fair this weekend, asking questions and talking with the people who raise such beautiful creatures. You should also know that Stanwood/Camano schools excel in animal husbandry, and tend to whoop it up at FFA competitions! The younger generation is incredibly passionate about animals.

Don't miss: The Costume Contest. It's incredible how connected animals are to the people who care for them, and even more so when they're having a little fun with a theme!

4. The Rides. My favorite ride of all time is The Zipper, and it's been known to make an appearance every couple years! Also a huge fan of the Giant Slide, The Scrambler and The Paratrooper.

Don't miss: The Round-Up. You know, the one where they strap you to a board with a bunch of other people in a circle and raise you up while you spin super fast! Don't puke!

Maybe I'll see you at 'The Best Lil' Fair In The West' this weekend, Rockaholics! Cheers to great weather and community fun!

Happy Adventuring,

Taryn Daly
