Taryn's Wreckreation Guide: 6 Record Store Ambassadors We Love

April 14, 2017

Record Store Day is celebrating 10 years in 2017, and all along the way there have been ambassadors championing global support of independent record stores. Every year, a band or artist has stepped up and stressed the importance of RSD and the culture these local businesses have created. With the continued involvement of these ambassadors, Record Store Day thrives in our communities. Here's a look back at the last 6 years of RSD Ambassadors:

2016 - Metallica supported Record Store Day last year in a HUGE way, both shouting from the rooftops how important RSD really is all year long, AND performing in-store at Rasputin Music in Berkeley, CA. James Hetfield shares some of his earliest memories in a record store and why RSD is important to him.

2015 - Dave Grohl served as RSD ambassador AND even rallied Foo Fighters to perform at Record Connection in Niles, OH for less than 150 people. He shares the magic he felt at record stores growing up and that the experience was magical enough to change his life. We're glad it did!

2014 - Chuck D of Public Enemy says his relationship with local record stores has been going strong for nearly 30 years, so it was a no brainer he'd sign on as an ambassador. He shares the love he has for giving back to the record stores who helped shape his career, describing these musical sanctuaries as local cultural centers.

2013 - Jack White was named ambassador and took the role VERY seriously, even breaking a world record at Third Man Records in Nashville the following year. He successfully pulled off the World's Fastest Studio-to-Store Record and delivered the vinyl to those in attendance! WHAT?! Way cool.

2012 - Iggy Pop's larger than life personality was perfect for Record Store Day ambassador, shedding light on the rise and fall of the record store over the years through his eyes, but also breathing life back into the tradition of the mighty record store. That year, RSD happened to fall on his birthday as well.

2011 - Ozzy Osbourne was technically the 2nd ever Ambassador, following in the footsteps of 2010's Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age/Kyuss/Them Crooked Vultures/Eagles Of Death Metal. Homme did such a stand up job with the inaugural position that everyone was worried the next one wouldn't be able to fill the shoes, but of course Ozzy delivered.

We can ALL be ambassadors of Record Store Day by spreading the word, getting involved, and supporting the movement. Explore and shop next Saturday - you never know who might pop into your local independent record store!

Happy Adventuring,

Taryn Daly
