Taryn's Wreckreation Guide: Bumper Chrome!!

September 13, 2016

Since I was a little girl, I have always loved fishing. My family was always big into trout fishing on Western WA lakes, the occasional walleye fishing in Eastern WA, and even some humpy fishing in Port Susan Bay. However, I had never caught a salmon until yesterday morning.

Brad and I hit the river with Angler Management out of Woodland, WA yesterday morning. Mike and his son Clayton have set up camp down there for the better part of the last month running guided trips for Kings. They also run Steelhead and Sturgeon guides, so that's now on my to-do list as well!

We were on the water by 6:30am and watched the sunrise. Being that I work nights, I NEVER see the sun rise! That's WAY earlier than my normal alarm clock goes off! But it was gorgeous and worth every sleep-deprived yawn.

Also, it's important to note that this was the most American boat I have ever laid my eyes on!!

Because this was my first salmon fishing trip, I was soaking it all in. I think I must have asked 100 questions, including details about the boat, specs on the equipment we were using, and everything in between. It was an INCREDIBLE learning experience all around. Especially the part where I saw the pole nearest me start banging. Reeling that fish in was an absolute RUSH. In my mind, I thought my reeling arm (my right/dominant arm) would be getting the work out, but my LEFT arm felt like it was holding onto that pole for dear life! That salmon put up a great fight and I was SQUEALING when I got him all the way to the boat!

Mike coached me through the whole process and it was a crazy adrenaline rush. Go ahead and laugh at my form...

What a gorgeous fish! Mike figured it weighed about 20 lbs, and when we got back to fish camp and hung the salmon from the scale, he was right at 19 lbs. Not bad for my first!

This trip was so much fun that I was telling Brad on the way home how I'd like to get into salmon fishing myself and add it to my long list of interests! In the meantime, until I gear up to that level, I'll go back and fish with Angler Management ANY time. Great guys, top of the line equipment, awesome stories, and incredible hospitality. Thank you Mike and Clayton! We'll be back for sure!!

Happy Adventuring,
