Taryn's Wreckreation Guide: Heather Lake is calling your name!

July 24, 2017

Because I work nights, I'm not a huge fan of early mornings, but when I get to take in the gorgeous scenery of a local hike, it's WELL worth the lack of sleep!

On Saturday morning, I got up early, packed up my backpack, loaded up the labs and met my girlfriend Chelly for a hike to Heather Lake. This beautiful trek is located off Mountain Loop Highway just outside Granite Falls, and it's a very popular area to explore this time of year! I recommend getting to the trailhead early to beat the crowds.

The hike itself is 4.6 miles roundtrip, and you can take a walk all the way around the lake once you get to the top! The elevation gain is more than 1,000 feet, so you'll definitely feel the burn! There are areas where you can see nothing but tree roots growing over the trail, plus rugged boulders and large steps made from tree trunks will get your blood pumping. It's a total adventure all the way up!

When you get up to the lake, there are spots all around the lake where you can stop and eat your lunch, throw sticks into the lake for the dogs to retrieve and of course take in breathtaking mountain views reflecting into Heather Lake.

Thanks to my girlfriend Chelly (you probably know her as a former Rock Girl!!) for getting my butt out of bed for a perfect Saturday morning!

I guess you could say the dogs enjoyed themselves, too. This was the "after pic" driving down Mountain Loop Highway. Totally tuckered out!

We even stopped off for a few cold ones at Josh's Taps and Caps in Snohomish afterward. The dogs slept on the refreshingly cold concrete floor while we recapped our adventure!

Can't wait for the next one, Chelly! You're quite the hiking partner!

Happy Adventuring,

Taryn Daly
