Taryn's Wreckreation Guide: Misery Ridge at Smith Rock

November 8, 2016

Bend is such a beautiful place to visit this time of year, not just because of the Bend Ale Trail, but because of the gorgeous, sweeping landscapes and the recreation that surrounds them. Not if, but WHEN you head south to Visit Bend, I want you to make sure and make a stop at Smith Rock State Park. We spent a few hours there and barely scraped the tip of the exploration iceberg!

Even if you just get out and take a peek around from the parking lot, it's worth the super short detour off Highway 97. The incredible rock formations and structures will blow your mind. Without having to hike, you can take in some spectacular views!

If you have some time, I definitely recommend taking the short but strenuous hike up Misery Ridge Loop Hike. You'll gain about 1,000 feet of elevation as you climb, so be prepared for some steep stepping and some stairs as well! Here's a little video footage from my Snapchat story on Saturday.

This is a super popular spot for sport rock climbing, so you'll see folks scaling faces like the Red Wall. We stopped and gawked at some of the folks who were halfway up the rocks!

It's worth every bead of sweat, and at 3.8 miles round trip, you can crank this out and still have time for more exploration around the park! The views from the top are STELLAR.

I can't wait to get back down to Central Oregon to conquer more incredible hikes! It's still in the mid-60s, so the warm weather and sunshine makes for perfect fall hiking conditions. Cheers to that!

Happy Adventuring,

Taryn Daly
