Taryn's Wreckreation Guide: Miss Rock Returns

August 1, 2016

The lovely lady of the lake is making her highly anticipated return to Seafair this weekend!  As a true PNWer, I remember getting SO excited about sitting in sun for the Greenwood Seafair Parade, watching the hydros race, and listening for the Blue Angels this time of year. This is Seattle's favorite summertime festival, and KISW is pretty damn proud to have Miss Rock back in action like the good ol' days!

Working at KISW, I can't tell you how many times I have been asked, "Are you guys ever going to have a Miss Rock again?" To be honest, I didn't know if it would ever happen, even as optimistic as I typically am! I can't even imagine what kind of work goes into a project this big. Thankfully, the fine folks at CARSTAR Auto Body were committed to the mission and all of the nostalgia that comes along with unearthing a legend.

Now, just to recap, she wasn't legendary for being a winning hydroplane. In fact, we were lucky if she finished at all! She was lovingly referred to as "the people's boat". Miss Rock was very slow, very loud, and very black. There have been recollections of Rockaholics swimming beers out to the driver after she crashed or broke down. She was ridden by Rock Girls and signed by rock stars. Because Miss Rock was such a huge part of the culture at KISW for so many years, bringing her back in 2016 is INCREDIBLE!

Former KISW Station Manager Steve West paid a visit to the station recently and he brought with him a scrapbook FILLED with more photos, articles, ads and memories of Miss Rock. Fortunately, he let me borrow this scrapbook and I was able to scan the commemorative pieces to share with you. Check out this amazing gallery here, and thanks to Steve for saving all of this memorabilia! As you'll see, he is quite the Miss Rock archivist.

With such a momentous occasion upon us, I certainly hope to see some Rockaholics out this weekend rooting on the lovely Miss Rock, just like old times. I'll be out there on the water, blanketed in sunscreen and screaming for her at the top of my lungs!

Check out the race schedule, and I'll catch you this weekend, my friends!

Happy Adventuring,

Taryn Daly
