Taryn's Wreckreation Guide: National Buy A Musical Instrument Day!

May 22, 2017

Growing up, my family was very musical. My dad has played the trombone in a band since I was in diapers, and my parents filled our house with music all my life.

I started out playing the clarinet in 3rd grade in hopes of picking up an alto saxophone one day, which I did a year later. I played sax in middle school and high school, and whether it was pep band or jazz band, I absolutely loved it!

At the end of high school, I begged my parents to get my a guitar, and they caved. They even picked me out an electric guitar, which I'm sure they regretted immediately. To this day, I wish I had stuck with ALL of it. Although I can still pick up a sax or an acoustic guitar and "fake it", I truly wish I had kept up with it. But I wanted to remind you that it's NEVER TOO LATE to get started with a musical instrument, and today's a great day to do just that - it's National Buy A Musical Instrument Day!

With school taking severe budget cuts over the years, some have lost their arts programs, including school band classes. It's even more important today to get musical instruments into the hands of children, and althought they can be expensive, local music stores often offer payment plans, consignment instruments or rental programs that can help offset the cost.

Whether you're into percussion, woodwinds, strings or brass, there's an instrument for everyone! They bring people together, no matter how different our backgrounds may be. Music is a universal language, so celebrate National Buy A Musical Instrument Day and speak the most beautiful language in existence!
