Taryn's Wreckreation Guide: Pairing Girl Scout Cookies w/ Beer

March 9, 2017

It's an evil time of year, but one of my favorites, nonetheless. Just when I finish dropping the extra 10 pounds of holiday weight, the Girl Scouts are posted up outside every grocery store I frequent. Talk about taking one step forward and two steps back! Since I was born without self control or shame, I'm an avid supporter of the Girl Scouts and their delicious cookies. Furthermore, I love pairing them with beer.

Samoas happen to be my favorite of the Girl Scout Cookie offerings, so we'll start there. Typically, I'm not big on coconut, but for some reason, the way they toast it then cover it with caramel and dark chocolate... it works for me!

Pair with: Kulshan Brewery's Transporter English Brown Porter. The notes of toffee compliment the caramel of the Samoas, plus you get the smooth flavor of coffee which ALWAYS pairs well with chocolate! This is the perfect duo for a crummy PNW day.

I love the simplicity of Trefoils, and shortbread cookies are a classic. I'm not entirely sure what the serving size is, but I've definitely put down half a box before, and I'm guessing that's not recommended.

Pair with: Pike Brewing's Pike Kilt Lifter. A classic cookie calls for a classic beer, and this Scotch Ale is a tradition in and of itself. The maltiness of this ale breathes extra life into a Trefoil, and together they're about as comforting as it gets. Enjoy this combo after a brisk walk on a sunny winter day.

From what I gather, I think the Thin Mint must be the favorite of all Girl Scout Cookies. Have you ever stuck them in the freezer for a bit? That's my favorite way to enjoy them! The cold gives the cookie extra crunch and enhances the minty flavor!

Pair with: Elysian Brewing's Split Shot Stout. Speaking of enhancing the flavor, Elysian brews the perfect espresso milk stout to compliment the Thin Mint. That dark, coffee taste with a blast of refreshing spearmint are a match made in chocolaty heaven! This tastes best while you're cozied up to a fire.

Lemon ANYTHING will win over my taste buds. Savanna Smiles are newer to the Girl Scout Cookie family, and they pack a bold, lemony flavor into lemon-shaped cookies coated with powdered sugar. The first time I tried one, I was hooked, and now this is one of my favorites.

Pair with: Farmstrong Brewing's NW Farmhouse Ale. You'll love the combination of this citrus-hopped ale when you take a bite of a Savanna Smile. This pairing is super refreshing, and if you love lemon like I do, it could be an addicting one. Sample this duo when the winter sun is out and you're dreaming of spring.

I couldn't escape... #girlscoutcookies #savannasmiles #nomnom

Peanut butter and chocolate should be married forever. The Girl Scouts absolutely nailed the pairing with Tagalongs. The crispy crunch of the cookie smothered in peanut butter and coated in rich chocolate have my taste buds doing cartwheels. Another cookie that I love to keep in the freezer!

Pair With: Odd Otter Brewing's Momma Otter's Peanut Butter Pancake Porter. Because there's no such thing as too much peanut butter, believe it or not! The peanut butter aromas and flavors you get through this duo are sheer perfection, with a nice, smoky maple flavor on the back end. A wonderful way to unwind and dry off after a walk with the dog in the rain.

Pairing Girl Scout Cookies with beer is awesome, but what's even cooler is the fact that you're supporting an incredible organization dedicated to empowering the next generation. That TOTALLY rocks! If you find another great Girl Scout Cookie pairing, please let me know!

Happy Adventuring,

Taryn Daly
