Taryn's Wreckreation Guide: Relax at Roche Harbor

January 23, 2017

Back to work after an extended birthday weekend, and BOY was it an awesome one! I spent a few days relaxing in Roche Harbor, one of the most beautiful places in the PNW, nay, the WORLD! And it's not hard to see why when you're taking in views like the one above.

Getting there by ferry is always a scenic experience, but I prefer the views from above. We flew with San Juan Airlines from Bellingham to the Roche Harbor, and I took some spectacular pictures during the flight.

After we landed, we checked into McMillin Suites, and our room was absolutely incredible. Between the claw-foot bathtub, the cozy bed, and the beautiful view, it was hard to leave the room!

But if we DID leave the room, it was usually to step outside onto the wrap-around deck looking out to the marina. I enjoyed a few beers and checked out the boats. Yacht-watching never gets old!

My parents NAILED it with the birthday beers. @elysianbrewing @lagunitasbeer . . . . . #hopstoopid #spacedust #drinklocal #drinkpnw #brewery #craftbeer

The 14th Annual Roche Harbor Salmon Classic was Friday and Saturday, with BIG money for winners. The 18-pounder below fetched $10,000 as the first place fish!

On Friday afternoon, we hopped aboard a Grady White with Roche Harbor Marina's Harbormaster, Kevin Carlton, who I actually go WAY back with because I went to college with his daughter. GO COUGS!

Thank you @rocheharbormarina Harbormaster Kevin for the gorgeous boat ride today. @sissybritt2 your dad is the coolest!!

He took us through some beautiful channels and passages, stopping to check out some fallow deer who live on Spieden Island, which is owned by the founder of Oakley. Now, if you aren't familiar with Spieden Island, back in the '70s it was populated with big game animals for big game hunting. This is not the case anymore, but the fallow deer and several wild sheep still roam the island. With no predators on the island, they are EVERYWHERE!

After a cold boat ride, the best thing to come home to was the fireplace in our suite, a glass of wine and a few friendly games of cribbage.

It's never fun saying good-bye to "Island Time", but when you have to leave, waving from above is pretty awesome. Saturday morning's flight aboard a 4-seater was SPECTACULAR. Clear and sunny!

Beautiful flight with @sanjuanairlines aboard a 4-seater! First time I've ever referred to an airplane as "cute" before ;)

I'm already looking forward to the next adventure in the islands! How lucky are we to have these stunning destinations in our back yard? Your turn, adventurers! Life on "Island Time" is SO good for the soul!

Happy Adventuring,

Taryn Daly
