Taryn's Wreckreation Guide: Why I Woke Up at 5am

May 17, 2016

Last year, a friend of mine asked me if I'd like to wake up once a month at 5am (sometimes earlier) and do something good for others. The first part - the waking up before the sun part... remember, I am a night owl by trade! Not much of a morning person. But doing something good for others?! I am all about that. "Tell me more!"

I agreed to help put on a breakfast at a Young Adult Shelter through ROOTS in Seattle, and I am so glad that I did. The first time I volunteered, I was overcome with positive energy, hope, and a newfound passion. It felt really good to make someone's morning with a cup of coffee, a hot breakfast, and some kind words. Someone who might be going through a rough patch and is trying hard to land on their feet. Maybe we haven't all been in that exact situation, but we've certainly had hard days, months, or years where we've struggled. It means a lot to know you have support somewhere, and ROOTS provides that place for young people in Seattle experiencing homelessness.

There are LOTS of ways to get involved with ROOTS, so I recommend you check out the various ways you can help if this is something you think you might want to do!

I have made this a monthly tradition, where I get up early and meet with fabulous women, and together we volunteer our time and resources. Thank you Sherry for getting me involved, and thank you ROOTS for being a critical part of the community!

Happy Adventuring,

Taryn Daly
