Vicky's Dirty N' Nerdy Blog: "Sailor Moon"

April 27, 2017

Hola my beautiful dirty nerds!

Recently, the lovely Destiny, (you might have heard Your Highness on The Broad-Cast) mentioned how much she loves Sailor Moon. That really brought me back to being in elementary school, being excited to get off the bus, grabbing something to eat, and then grabbing my brother so we can perch up in front of the TV at 4pm to watch the new daily episode of Sailor Moon.

For those who don’t know about Sailor Moon, it is an anime about a 13-year-old clumsy, overly sensitive girl who runs into a talking cat that tells her that she is a guardian named Sailor Moon destined to find and protect the Moon Princess. As the series goes on, she finds and helps unite the other guardians and fight evil from the Dark Kingdom who want to rule over Earth and the moon.

There is love, there is sparkle, fighting, monsters, cool outfits…now you understand why 8-year-old Vicky loved this show (and 27-year-old Vicky)…

I was also a sucker for the theme songs:

While I was talking to Destiny about Sailor Moon, she mentioned the whole series is currently on Hulu so I immediately when home and started re-watching it! It took me a week to finish the first season…yes I have a show-binging problem.

Now some things I noticed that was different is that Hulu has the “English dubbed” version which means it’s the same episodes from Japan instead of the ones they had reedited for the young, sensitive American child’s mind back in the 90’s. So less “nudity”, no swearing (Oh dear, we can’t have the children hear someone say “damn”), and no blood. Also, there were a few episodes I completely didn’t remember, and it turns out they had edited the original 46 episodes down to 40.

Ok, so the only complaint I have is now being an adult, you realize how creepy some cartoons can be. For example, Sailor Moon AKA Usagi Tsukino is a 13-year-old middle school girl, her love interest; Tuxedo Mask is a college student. Even if he is 17-18 years old, that is still a little odd. Also, the amount of up skirt moments (either when flying through the air or fighting) was a little, well, off.

Then again, it’s a cartoon, they are fighting monsters in heals, we have to not nitpick otherwise we’ll turn to hate it.

Oddly enough, as I’ve been in this binge mode, I also ran into this awesome video of Russian ice skater Evgenia Medvedeva do a Sailor Moon themed performance at the Exhibition World Team Trophy 2017 in Tokyo that was not only impressive but super cute!

I will for sure be watching the whole series in the next couple weeks, so if you don’t hear from me, you’ll know where I will be.

Until next time, stay nerdy!
